Symbolism is very characteristic of the speech and writing styles of the Ancient Near East. Symbols, metaphors and parables were used throughout The Bible to provide understanding for the common people of the time. We must understand the Ancient Semitic Culture and traditions to gain a meaningful understanding of those passages. In Isaiah "The calf lying down with the lion" is a metaphor is symbolic of larger nations getting along in harmony with smaller nations. Scripture Isaiah11:6
Seminar Description This seminar is an introduction to symbolism used in The Bible. We will identify various passages in The Bible where Symbolism is used and contrast it with other versions of The Bible to provide a more meaningful understanding of the passage. We will study the use of Parables and Metaphors. Objectives To recognize Symbolism when reading The Bible. To emphasize that the The Bible cannot always be taken literally.
