Culture  It is important to understand how the Ancient Near Eastern people thought and behaved  as part of their culture.  There were no clocks or calendars, time and details were not significant.  For example, Their treatment of women is foreign and offensive to our way of thinking.  However, when you understand the status of women at the time, the meaning of the scriptural passage becomes clear, even though it is still offensive to us.   Scripture   1 Cor 11:7-12

Symbolism is very characteristic of the speech and writing styles of the Ancient Near East.   Symbols, metaphors and parables were used throughout The Bible to provide understanding for the common people of the time.  We must understand  the Ancient Semitic Culture and traditions to gain a meaningful understanding of those passages.  In Isaiah "The calf lying down with the lion" is a metaphor is symbolic of larger nations getting along in harmony with smaller nations.  Scripture   Isaiah11:6

Seminar Description

This seminar is an introduction to symbolism used in The Bible.  We will identify various passages in The Bible where Symbolism is used and contrast it with other versions of The Bible to provide a more meaningful understanding of the passage.  We will study the use of Parables  and  Metaphors.
Objectives
To recognize  Symbolism when reading The Bible.
To emphasize that the The Bible cannot always be taken literally.

Idioms are characteristic of Ancient Near Eastern speech and writing and are used in our world today.  However, idioms are common only to the language and culture where they are used.   Idioms in The Bible are often taken literally because we in the western world do not understand the language and culture of the Ancient Near East.  One prime example is the  idiom  "hellfire".  It does not mean a place where you burn.  In Aramaic it means  "mental anguish or torment".
Therefore the passage takes on new meaning when the idiom is translated properly.   Matthew 5:22

Amplification is characteristic of the Ancient Near Eastern way of speaking and writing.   It is a form of exaggeration used to frame a story to emphasize how really great the person or the event really was.  Samson is an example.  He killed many with the jawbone of an ass, but not a thousand.
Scripture  Judges  15:15
